There are not many people that do good things for others and there are even fewer that do it for free. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you all do! My son, Patrick Daniels, is a volunteer at Herald Harbor and he will be leaving to college at the end of August. The Herald Harbor Volunteer Fire Department has had such a positive impact on his life.
P.S. Jason and Ashley, a special thanks to the two of you.

Good job. Web site is well organized.Keep posting those photos.Stay safe, Mike Paris-McLean VFD.
I am a former volunteer firefighter - and I started a site to help off duty firefighters get more projects. I offer a free directory to firefighters so that their services can be found online. Can you help by linking to me from your pages? I appreciate it...
I was an active FF during the forties and early fifties. Reading some of the comments really transported me back. Jean Newell was a good friend. My sister Grace and I often played at the Newell house at the end of Eddy Road. Then to see a note from George Wilbur Joseph Polyanski was a real treat. I thought he was living in Germany. I would like to contact him. I noted that someone mentioned and honor roll for the department. If such is happening, I would like to nominate Milton Sterling for that place.

My dad, the late George J. Gibmeyer, Sr., played "Sparky" the fire dog back in the 1960's for the HHVFD! What wonderful memories I have of him donning his Sparky costume (all 6'4") teaching children not to play with matches or to "stop, drop and roll." I remember the old fire house and Mr. Bobby Darr.
Iam the proud mother of a firefighter/paramedic/emt.
May God bless each and every one of you brave men and women!

My father was Ellsworth McQuay. He was a volunteer at HHVFD. How well I remember those initials. The Fire Department was a big part of our life. My father, a voluteer, spent many hours working for the Fire Department, he also taught Basic and Advanced Fire Fighting for the University of Maryland Fire Extension Service. I am so proud of him.

Does HHVFD do door-to-door fund raising, i.e. Douglas comes by each year for a donation and I would like to verify that this is actually connected to HHVFD.
Hi Friends! Keep on doing what you are doing. You guys do an excellent job - greetings from Vienna Gregor

Thank you Herald Harbor Vol Fire Dept for the incredibly speedy supply of a pump when water had filled my entire crawl space covering a breaker panel, outlets, an exharust fan and my hydro pneumatic tank. The rumbling noise that prompted my call turned out to be the floating tank and some paint cans hitting my floor.
No pumps were for sale or rent anywhere I called but you were there when I needed you. I always contribute to your door to door fund raiser but this year I'm sending a check as soon as I recover from paying for the new well pump and hydro tank. I'll have a pump of my own when this happens again.
Thanks again, Susan Guyaux

Wow! Lottsa positive changes since the days I was a member! It's OUTSTANDING to see so much diversity in gender and responsibility.
In 1977, I took (and passed) the EMT-A course and exam at Riviera Beach FD, taught by (then) AACOFD EMS Capt, Roger Simonds. What a great teacher he was! (Everytime I've ever inserted an oral airway, I picture his demo) Unfortunately, Station 6's leadership at the time didn't feel that women should be anything but a 'third aide' on the ambulance.
One boring day-just the paid engineman and the paid FF were there, and a call came out for an auto-ped/bicycle, victim a child, on 301. It was originally toned out to several (I think I remember it was 6) other stations-with no one available. We even tried to call Mr. Hall (? sweet ol' guy who was President), for guidance but couldn't reach him. The paid engineman made the command decision and sent the FF and myself out. As often happens, the call was not accurate-a little old guy had been blown off his bike by a big rig as he was riding alongside the highway. A little road rash, he was fine and declined transport. We went back in service and immediately caught a call to a diabetic emergency, near FT Meade. The female patient was an Army dependent, felt like she was having an insulin reaction, and we found her halfway through a bottle of pancake syrup! heheh. Back then, we didn't have glucometers, etc, so we transported her to Kimbrough-she was fine. Unfortunately, our EMS head, a vol LT met us at Kimbrough (he worked nearby at NSA). He immediately suspended me on the spot, pending further action. It was a most serious offense: I had not been 'qualified' to ride except as a third aid-and of course, that was because of my gender-the fear was I wouldn't be able to "lift", etc, but I was never offered any opportunity to test my physical skills, again because I was female. Now, mind you, I had been CAPT of my tennis team at 3 different high schools, (AF brat), Varsity lettered in basketball, tennis, softball, and Varsity cheerleading. I was even "Booster Club Female Athlete of the Year" at one hs I attended. I used to jog to the firehouse every day, as I had no vehicle, from our home in Arden. Fortunately for me, the Anne Arundel County FD contacted HHVFD and officially notified them that they would support ME in any actionable cause related to any disciplinary action based on this incident. All charges/suspension was terminated, however, I was no longer a member of the "brotherhood" at HHVFD, and I'm sure you understand what that meant. So, consequently I moved on. Boys and their toys. Just to prove to myself I could 'do it' I applied to and completed the requirements (including physical agility test) for AACounty PD, but was in the process of marrying a BWI FF who didn't want a cop for a wife. I continued my education at the University of Maryland, majoring in Aeronautical Engineering (on a scholarship), but that EMS bug had bitten me hard. Soon I quit, we moved to Texas (where both of us military brats were originally from) Had a son, divorced, then put myself through nursing school as a single mom. 22 years ago, while working as an ER nurse at a trauma center, my future husband brought me a patient. (He works for Careflite, the equivalent, I guess of the State Police helicopter system in place at the time I was in MD). This year we celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. My eldest manchild is 26 and completed grad school at St Louis U. Our younger manchild is 19, finishing his freshman year in college. I have flown patients on rotary and fixed wing aircraft, civilian as well as military. I've worked all over Texas, in Level I trauma centers as charge, then as House Supervisor, in 900+ bed hospitals. My husband is no longer a medic-he is the Directorof Logistics for Careflite. I'm working for the Navy now, mostly doing Psych, working mostly with Marines coming back from 2nd, 3rd, etc deployments to the desert, while I work on a Nurse Practitioner Masters in Psych-Mental Health. I'm also responsible for the trauma training of about 50 hospital corpsmen, many who deploy with the Marines to the desert.
I appreciate the opportunities I was given at HHVFD, and have no bitterness towards anyone at all-the reactions and attitudes were a reflection of the times. In many ways, their behaviors only made me stronger-and more successful as a nurse. (I've always been the ER nurse who doesn't rag on the medics cuz the IV 'isn't perfect' etc, and have been quick to educate those nurses about the uncontrolled environmental conditions all medics work in)
But I am very heartened to see so many women in responsible positions at Station 6 now...we've come a looooong way baby!

I fondly remember the fire station there. My uncle, Ellsworth McQuay had been a member not only at the station, but had lived there as well. My best memories are, as a child, visiting my grandparents who also lived there, my cousins, just a bunch of McQuays there were!
Bittersweet memories for now, most of them have passed and I take a big breath as the mental images flood though me, but that is ok. It seems that I can all most smell the steamed blue claw crab and feel the sun on young shoulders. It was also where I got hurt as a child.
If anyone reads this, feel free to email back. My mother was Geneva Blanch-Nelson McQuay who later became (last hubby's name) Cutler.
Bless,
Annitta

First time I've seen your site. Interesting. I was a member in the 40's and also a Lt. My father, Reuben, was a chief and my brother (Albert - "Boots") was a Cpt. (not all the same time). I remember the 1928 La Salle (?) and the White truck that replaced it. Only familar name in your guestbook was Newell. We were good friends, and spent a lot of time in their area. Hope to get down to the Harbor soon and look over old stomping grounds. Sure glad to see your site. Keep up the good work. George Polyanski (Walnut and Eddy Road)

Hey Guys. The website looks great. I think that it is a wonderful way to let people in the community know what is going on and that we are here for them. Everyone keep up the good work. Thanks guys!
Nice website. I used to volunteer @ HH in the '80's (yeh, way back when Brush 6 was being built and Tanker 6 was a tractor trailer!!!) I'm a volunteer @ Bel Air in Harford County now. Glad to see things are going well @ HH. I'll have to stop by one day to show the kids where Dad used to volly.
