Public Information
With the approach of warm and dry weather in the summer months, the dangers of brush and wildfires increase. The officers and members of the Herald Harbor Volunteer Fire Department would like to encourage members of our community to be FIREWISE. Firewise Maryland is a community education effort through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forestry Service to help homeowners make their properties safer in the event of wildfires.
Please visit the Forestry Service Firewise Maryland website and look for displays at the Summer Concerts and our other community events for more information an how to make your home Firewise.
DON'T FORGET TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE NUMBERS EASILY VISIBLE FROM THE STREET. ITS NOT ONLY A LAW BUT IT GETS US THERE FASTER IF WE CAN SEE YOUR NUMBERS.
Vial of L.I.F.E. Program
County Executive John R Leopold, Fire Chief John Robert Ray, and the Anne Arundel County Fire Safety Foundation have teamed up to provide a simple, new tool designed to help save lives in an emergency situation. This program is called the "Vial of Life" (Lifesaving Information for Emergencies). "The Vial of L.I.F.E. Program is designed to speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself and contains important medical information that can assist emergency personnel in administering the proper medical treatment" said County Executive John R. Leopold.
"The Vial of L.I.F.E. will be particularly useful for seniors, disabled individuals, and persons who live alone" said Fire Chief John Robert Ray. The Vial of L.I.F.E. consists of a 3-inch plastic prescription vial containing medical forms with an individual's medical history.
Here's how it works:
1. Complete the form with your vital medical information such as: important phone numbers, preferred hospital, and medications.
2. Place completed form in vial and place it on the top shelf inside your refrigerator door.
3. Place the sticker on the front of your refrigerator near the top of the door.
Why the refrigerator? Emergency first responders are trained to look for the containers in refrigerators upon arrival at a residence. in addition, in the event of a fire your refrigerator will act as a safe protecting your vital information inside.
County residents can obtain the "Vial of L.I.F.E." beginning on Friday, October 29, 2010, from any of the County's 31 Fire Stations, daily between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The vials can also be obtained at the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Headquarters located at 8501 Veterans Highway in Millersville, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The vial of life is more than a cool idea; it could help to save your life.
